I was privileged to visit Giant's Castle in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, South Africa, which is a world heritage site, with a couple of friends recently. A bird hide, appropriately named the "Lammergeier Hide", has specifically been set up for photographers to photograph the highly endangered bearded vulture or "lammergeier" (the old folks believed that they were catching and preying on the lambs or "lammers" of their sheep, which rumor has been completely dismissed in recent years).
This highly endangered bird of prey or scavenger, which ever way you may prefer it, has been threatened by the ever increasing invasion of mankind into its natural environment and the disappearance of its natural food source, bones and bone marrow... It is not particularly fond of meat at all and without the natural resources to feed on, it is doomed to extinction!
Giant's Castle is part of a vulture feeding project or so-called "vulture restaurant" and you can read more about it on the website beardedvulture.org
